Free Standing Emergency Room

Sell Free Standing Emergency Room

Improve Surgery Center ProfitabilityThe free-standing emergency room is an emerging model based on rising demand for health care. The number of centers has doubled to more than 400 in the past four years. They are walk-in medical facilities that are fully equipped to diagnose medical emergencies due to illness and trauma, similar to a hospital’s emergency room. However, ambulances typically do not bring patients to the center and those patients who do require a hospital stay, surgery, or specialist care are transferred via ambulance to an acute care or specialty hospital. They are currently present in about 16 states and operated by hospitals, physicians, and non-physician entrepreneurs. While marketed as full service emergency rooms, free-standing emergency rooms differ from emergency departments in that they typically see fewer patients, lack EMS service to their facilities, have lower hospital admission rates, involve shorter stays, treat lower acuity health problems, and tend to be found in affluent, suburban retail areas. They differ from urgent care centers in the way that they are open 24 hour/365 days, are treated as ER’s by insurance companies include separate facility and professional fees, are staffed by emergency physicians and nurses, and have more advanced lifesaving, imaging and laboratory capabilities.
